COMING from a non-religious background, the idea of owning a church seemed an unlikely scenario for Thrity Anthon.

Yet 20 years later, former the Uniting Church on 104B Cross Rd, Highgate has been a loyal family home for Ms Anthon and her family, and a talking point at many dinner parties and family gatherings.

“The property was renovated in the early nineties and we bought it just after that in 1998,” Ms Anthon says.

“We didn’t actually go for a church, we’re not religious, but needed to be in the area for school. It was a matter of, right place at the right time.

“We’ve enjoyed living here. It’s actually quite a solid building with a point of difference.

“It’s a home that offers many talking points and I’ve actually met people who attended church in this building.”

With the owners now looking to downsize, the historic property will go to auction on September 2 at 11am, with a price guide of $1.1 million.

Set on a 1070sqm, landscaped block, the former 1920s church has been converted to a four-bedroom, two-bathroom family home that retains many of its original features, including vaulted timber ceiling, floorboards, stained glass windows and traditional curved, recessed walls.

Entry to the home is via an enclosed porch which leads to one of three main living areas.

A long hallway, which also offers access to three bedrooms, one with walk-in-robe and access to the family bathroom, leads to the main living space at the rear of the home.

It is here that you will find the second open-plan living and dining area, and stained glass French doors that lead to the paved outdoor entertainment area.

Return to the hallway and climb the stairs to the upper level where you will find a private family room or parent retreat complete with a wet bar.

“You can still see quite clearly what the church hall used to look like,” Ms Anthon said.

“Throughout the years, we’ve been very careful, with the renovations that we’ve done, not to alter that as it’s part of this home’s charm.”
